THE TASHI LHUNPO MONKS - CREATION OF THE PEACE MANDALA
We were incredibly honoured to host the Tashi Lhunpo Tibetan Monks during their Europe tour. They demonstrated the exquisite art of ‘painting’ with crushed marble as they constructed a mandala at Art Represent.
Made up of millions of grains of brilliantly coloured marble-sand, the monks use ‘chagpurs’ – hollow funnels – to meticulously draw the images representing deities and dakinis in a meditational ritual which stretches back to the beginning of the Buddhist tradition.
The Peace Mandala was completed in one day from 11 am - 5pm, and after a blessing and dedication it will be ritually destroyed to in a moving ceremony illustrating the impermanence of all things. Alongside the construction of the mandala, the monks will be held a mandala workshop and treated all the participants to home-made Tibetan tea.
